People play a crucial part in all organizations, whether they are
for-profit or non-profit. People are more crucial than ever, despite the
development of technology and the rising need for occupations requiring
cognitive ability. People are required in every facet of the business.
Understanding organizational behaviour or the human side of the business may
therefore result in improved earnings, productivity, and customer loyalty
(Ferres, 2015).
Wedgewood
(2018) asserts that work is an essential component of a person's life in his
study on work-life balance. Additionally, balancing life at work and life
outside of work is a difficult task. It is challenging to separate work from
one's personal life, which makes quick changes in the business scene and the increased
desire for communication through technology and social media complicated.
Business wants their employees to achieve better outcomes in terms of quantity
and quality, which results in longer workdays and less time spent at home.
An unbalanced
life may result in tiredness, stress, strained relationships, fatigue, and
other negative effects. An employee may believe that there is not enough time
to complete all of the tasks included in the scope of their work when there is
no work-life balance in the organization (Walter, 2018). As a result,
preserving a healthy work-life balance is crucial for one's well-being and
relationships as well as for an employee's level of productivity and
organizational effectiveness (Wedgwood, 2018). Positive organizational behaviour
can have an effect on employee engagement and work-life balance.
Therefore,
positive organizational behaviours that might result in organizational outcomes
like high productivity, profitability, and performance are the predictors of
work-life balance and employee engagement.
The Maslow leadership theory in the
context of employee engagement
Maslow's theory is easily adapted to
workplace mentalities that range from individuals who simply show up for work
to those who do very well and like what they do. Maslow's hierarchy of
requirements, which was first proposed in 1943, has five motivating demands
that are sometimes pictured as tiers within a pyramid. (Stress Management Society,
2017-2019).
Your physiological needs—food,
water, and other necessities of life—are at the bottom of the hierarchy. On top
of that, you have safety, then love or a sense of belonging, then respect, and
ultimately self-actualization. The pyramid depicts a person's motivational
journey as they meet one requirement and advance to the next level. (Stress Management
Society, 2017-2019).
The issue is that a large portion of
us is stuck on the bottom rung of the hierarchy of needs as a result of the
demands and stress of our daily lives. Breathing, eating, drinking, finding a
place to stay, getting dressed, and sleeping is all basic physiological
necessities that we tend to overlook. (Stress Management Society, 2017-2019).
Engaged employees- work with passion and feel a profound connection to their work and organization. They drive innovation and move the organization forward.
Disengaged
Employees - These are
those who are not emotionally invested in their work. They may be physically
present at work, but they're not emotionally or mentally engaged in their job.
This can lead to a number of negative outcomes for the organization, including
decreased productivity and creativity, and higher rates of absenteeism and
turnover
Actively
Disengaged Employees–Are more likely to vent frequently to others, expressing their
frustrations and dissatisfactions, publicly display a bad attitude, have
chronic attendance issues, not be as productive, demotivate others on the team,
cost the company in terms of the extra time required to manage them as well as
the negative effects of creating poor customer experiences, and they may be
looking for a new job.
In an
organization the level of employee engagement is important, and it does affect
productivity, thus organizations must consider factors that can affect the
level of engagement of employees, such as work life balance. Work-life balance does not only increase employee commitment, but
it improves family relationship and family satisfaction (Goyal & Babel,
2015).

ReplyDeleteDisengagement, whether active or passive, may be a defence mechanism people develop in stressful work environments or in organizations where they do not feel appreciated or paid for the work they do. It should be a part of corporate structure to try provide psychological reinforcement to disengaged employees. It can be something as simple as verbal encouragement for good work done or something as involved as counselling services for employees. In any case more engagement is good for both the employer and the employees.

DeleteThis is absolutely true. The thing is, it is hard to manage our emotions when we have to face problems at work then family problems. Sometimes, little things can be a big problems though
ReplyDeleteVery true! As Humans, we all struggle with our emotions but as good leaders, we can work on how to help our employees manage and be better at Emotional Intelligence in order to be efficient in our personal and professional life.
DeleteGiven the present crisis situation in Sri Lanka, it is very important to assess the importance of work-life balance as an organization. Most of the employees in every organization in the country are likely to migrate over stressful work conditions, financial difficulties, and changing work cultures due to competition. This is a good start and looking forward to seeing good content.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for the comment, Mr.Nadun. Totally agree with you.
DeleteWhy do you think there some people want to spend less time at work, either by working shorter hours or going into the workplace late?
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for the comment, Mr. Danushka. One of the hardest things, when we try to balance work-life, is that people fail in prioritizing. I'm sure as working personnel we all have been there at some point in our life. As I have mentioned Disengaged Employees arise when they detach themselves emotionally from work which is a direct result of poor or lower charismatic leadership in the Organization. As good Leaders, we should always be concerned and empathetic about our team members. When the employees' Emotional/ Mental needs are not met their engagement drops by a considerable amount which results in less interest to be present at the workplace.
DeleteYes it is always need to balance the work life and the personal life to keep a good and healthy lifestyle.very important topic to talk as we all are following a very busy life schedule. ReplyDeleteWell said! couldn't agree more with this article 👌
Yes indeed, individual behavior has a positive and significant impact on employee performance.
The importance of understanding individual behavior is because each individual has different characteristics that affect organizational work patterns and systems such as motivation, perception, attitude, personality.
Positive organizational behaviours helps to determine the reputation of a company to the outside world, and so it is imperative for companies to maintain a good culture to increase employee satisfaction and attract customers.
Managers in an organization should learn the attitudes of employees to be able to get aware of future problems arising from comparative attitudes. This will also help create positive employee attitudes by fostering a sense of satisfaction, thereby raising the level of effectiveness in the organization.
It is very useful for every professionals as well as the workers.we all must have the balance in both job and our personal life.so according to my view you have said it well.most of the professions make some people stressful.so this may help more and more for many ones.
ReplyDeleteI too strongly believed that at striking a good balance between our professional and personal lives is pivotal to maximize our efficiency and productivity in both aspects of our lives and decreased our stress levels as well.
ReplyDeleteis it really practical topic in industry? most of the People are complaining about their work and personal life balancing.
ReplyDeleteis Country situation dircet impact to this?
Thank you for the comment, Mr.Dinusha. Not just the country's situation but in a global context. work-life central is a core HR Process to engage the employees.
DeleteMost of the people complaining as work and personal life not balancing? what is your idea about that
ReplyDeletePeople complain about the balance when there is an issue underneath. When people are disturbed, they cannot focus on work. Today we are living in a world where we believe that we are living to earn, it should be rather promoted as we are earning to live. This concept itself would be useful in aligning the employees toward better engagement practically.
DeleteCulture of the relevant work place is directly effect for this. And we need to develop a employee friendly culture in all organizations. That will be help to maintain a well balance mind.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the comment Mr.Prasad. Totally agree with you
DeleteIt is very hard to balance both work & personal life together since the employers want us to sacrifice our personal life and situation has been worst after the economic crisis in Sri Lanka
ReplyDeleteVery relatable Ms.Sanjana. There are instances where employers expect employees to perform sacrificing their personal life which is a clear sign of a negative impact on the whole organization health.
DeleteIf we can balance our personal life and professional life in correctly we would not face stress in mind. But balancing these two parts is very difficult
ReplyDeleteEverything has two different sides. We need balance in everything.
DeleteThe main goal in every persons life is provide for family. If a employee balancing work with personal life it will definitely affect positively towards his productivity
ReplyDeleteWhen people understand this balancing both personal and professional life become easy. Thank you for the comment, Ms, Apsara.
Deletewell explained..! Employee dedication and connection to an organization is measured by the term "employee engagement." In today's cutthroat corporate environment, employee engagement has emerged as a crucial success factor. High levels of engagement enhance shareholder value, build consumer loyalty, and help organizations retain their best employees.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the comment, Ms.Shamini. Glad you liked it. And you have shared some great thoughts on it.
